Ayurveda — pronounced “AH-yur-VAY-dah” — is a Sanskrit word meaning “the science of life.” Originating in India over 5,000 years ago, it's the world's oldest continuously practiced healing system. And it's more relevant today than ever.
While modern medicine treats symptoms, Ayurveda addresses the root cause. It views each person as a unique combination of elements and teaches that when diet is correct, medicine is of no need.
The Five Elements
Ayurveda teaches that everything in the universe — including your body — is made of five elements:
Earth
Water
Fire
Air
Space
These elements combine in different proportions to create three primary body types, or doshas. Understanding your dosha is the first step to Ayurvedic wellness.
The Three Doshas
💨 Vata (Air + Space)
Creative, quick-thinking, energetic. Vata types are often slender, enthusiastic, and full of ideas. When balanced, they're joyful and vibrant. When imbalanced, they experience anxiety, dry skin, insomnia, and scattered thinking.
Balance with: Warm, cooked foods • Routine and rest • Grounding yoga practices • Sweet, sour, and salty tastes
🔥 Pitta (Fire + Water)
Driven, focused, passionate. Pitta types are natural leaders with strong digestion and sharp intellect. When balanced, they're confident and purposeful. When imbalanced, they experience irritability, heartburn, skin rashes, and burnout.
Balance with: Cooling, hydrating foods • Time in nature • Gentle, non-competitive yoga • Sweet, bitter, and astringent tastes
🌍 Kapha (Earth + Water)
Steady, nurturing, grounded. Kapha types are loyal, patient, and strong. When balanced, they're loving and stable. When imbalanced, they experience weight gain, lethargy, congestion, and emotional attachment.
Balance with: Light, warm, spicy foods • Stimulating activity • Dynamic, energizing yoga • Pungent, bitter, and astringent tastes
Most people are a combination of two doshas, with one being dominant. A personalized Ayurveda consultation can help you discover your unique constitution and create a wellness plan tailored specifically to you.
